What can coaching really bring to language learning?Is it just a trend? A marketing argument?Anyone can call themselves a “coach” without training or a clear framework.

Being a member of the ICF is different.

It means adhering to a precise competency framework, a code of ethics, and 8 core competencies that ensure a professional, ethical, and effective practice.

In this article, I invite you to explore the first competency: Ethics and Framework, and why it is so critical in language learning.

The first ICF principle is clear: demonstrate ethical practice.

In concrete terms, this means:

• establishing a clear framework (duration, rhythm, goals, success criteria);

• respecting the learner’s preferences, culture, and beliefs;

• guaranteeing confidentiality of all exchanges;

• avoiding unnecessary jargon and communicating simply and clearly;

• recognizing your own limits and, when needed, referring to another professional.

Why Ethics and Framework Matter in Language Learning

Because a clear agreement reduces ambivalence and procrastination.Because psychological safety allows learners to dare making mistakes, speaking, testing, and progressing.

In language coaching, the learner is often in a zone of discomfort: they must speak, make mistakes, reformulate, and try again. Without a framework, this zone quickly becomes anxiety-inducing. With an ethical framework, it becomes a space for growth.
